Tata SKY DTH TV service review

There are lots of bloated things about India. Go ahead, label me an unpatriotic buffoon, pessimist and what have you, but even you will agree when we get talking about India’s cable TV distribution system. For those not in the know, its a big mafia in itself. Each area is controlled by a goon or a similar equivalent and anyone making the slightest of noises is “taken care of”. Thats an exaggeration of course, but you get the picture.
Even if you can live with that, you can certainly not be living with the quality of the signal or the choice of channels Mr. Cable Gangsta offers. And no Siree, no explanation offered for frequent outages and distorted signals. If you’re lucky enough (and Mr. Gangsta and Co are in the mood…) they might, at best, give you a “kaam chaloo hai“ reply or something to that effect.

We had had enough of the nonsense and Daddy dearest lost his cool when Mr. Gangsta distorted his favorite, CNBC. You know, that channel, wherein people watch some lifeless graphs all day and routinely skip 2 (or more) heartbeats in co-relation with the percentage change in stock price.

DTH was the only viable option in sight. DTH or Direct-To-Home is defined as the receiving of satellite programmes with a personal dish in an individual home. DTH happens to be far more superior than cable television, simply because it is beamed as a digital signal and not as an analog one. This allows for far more bandwidth, which translates into better picture and sound.

India caught up on the DTH bandwagon in early 2006 and now we have 2 contenders in that very space (2 more on the way, Reliance and Airtel, but thats still some time away, I presume) . Zee Corp. owned DishTV and TATA Sky. Today we’ll be taking a look at the latter. (because I brought it, hee hee)

TATA SKY

Installation

Its a right breeze, you don’t have to worry about one damn thing apart from the fact that you have the necessary permissions from your residential committee.( I have heard of more than one case, wherein the customer brought the set-top-box from the dealer, but wasn’t allowed to fix the dish. So, watch it). The equipment which was brought to affix the dish was really cool. There was a really nifty spirit level which allowed the smart sods from Tata Sky to check whether the setup was absolutely in place. There was a lot more uber-cool equipment, which certainly sent the geek in me into a tizzy.

The whole thing will take a maximum of 2 hours, from fixing to calibration. You are surely going to be in for a surprise, when they finish doing their job.

Oh, Tata Sky, where hath you been before? Seriously, its that kinda reaction when you first switch on the idiot box after the installation. The colors are vivid, bright and just like what they were intended to be anyway. This thing deserves as big a TV you can afford.

Even the news presenters look that much more better(the fairer sex, I mean), even whilst delivering the same old “Breaking News”. I am also having a gala time watching all the kids channels. Cartoon Network, Pogo and their ilk. “Mom, I want that pack of chips, its got something free inside it!!” Hee, hee, I love being kid!

Audio

The audio, too, is nothing short of amazing. All the frequencies are reproduced quite brilliantly, and the better the speaker system you have, the better your experience. Speech, music, thunder and rain everything sounds quite lively. Well, more livelier than cable TV in any case.

What more is new?

Showcase

Tata gives you the option of watching certain movies of their choice and a lot of times of the day. You select, pay 75 bucks through phone or SMS, get the popcorn and watch the whole movie with just a single ad break. Neat, I say.

Active Content

This is the real fun part and what makes Tata Sky better than the competition. Active Content, is their way of offering a range of interactive content and keeping everyone happy.

You’ve got games, stories and learning sections for the kids (look at the marketing genius, they know todays kids have enormous influence over parents buying decisions… smart), cooking and newsroom (4 major news channels in one screen) for mom and pop, astrology for the future paranoid and what have you.

They also have Active Sports, which is a bit too optimized for cricket. You can’t really blame Tata for this. India is a cricket crazy nation and that won’t change for quite a while. Only thing is that they have taken the “Select camera angle” feature out. Should have kept it, really. Indians would love to know everything about cricket from any and every god damned angle.

The pricing

Tata offers four packages in the range of Rs 250/- to 350/-. You can take a look at them over here.

We used to pay the cable guy 150 bucks and he was to increase it to 200 or something very soon. We seriously don’t mind paying a bit more for really watching some TV rather than all the worldly noises being picked up the silly analog cable. There’s enough disturbance in my life already, thank you very much.

Verdict

DTH is nothing short of an eye-opening experience and Tata Sky makes it all the more better. If you’re still stuck with cable TV, you’re genuinely missing something. No, a lot more, actually. Go, get it, quick!! The idiot box is dead, the smart box is here.

    It’s good for a start, but now that they have been in operation for over a year, they really need to expand their offering. How about a box with a built in DVR to allow you to record the programs you want to watch later? Introduce that, Tata sky and you’ll have me as a subscriber in a jiffy.

    They(SET TOP BOX) promised me digital quality picture and sound.
    Though the quality is digital, I get scrambled picture and sound with that ‘creech-creech’ sound once every 10 seconds. That not what I paid for.
    Also many times I get this ’7-Bad signal or no signal. Contact cable operator’.

    I paid Rs. 1350 (onetime) for the instrument and now have to pay Rs. 280 per month till CAS is activated here(Thane). After that Rs.5 taxes per pay channel. But seeing the Tata Sky family pack, I am tempted to buy Tata Sky.

    Really, I won’t have bothered Rs. 4000 Rs. 250 monthly packages for what Tata Sky is offering.

    After going through these 3-dishtv,sky and sun,i have selected sun dth as it is cheaper and bundles all malayalam channels and in total 75 channels as of now 15FM audio channels.
    My advice is,if you are not a sports viewer(even DD is bundled though),you are a Malayali or a Kannadiga,dont waste ur time with sky or dishtv-straight grab sun dth for Rs.2000/- which acc to me is a steal of a deal :mrgreen: even it is better to know that sun & tata sky are in collaboration and you can expect all those tata sky exclusive to land on sun dth @ reasonable,cheap prices soon.so,I feel sun dth is better,if at all now it is restricted to south India. by the way,best of Luck with ur sky experiance!my bro-in-law is using it in blore and he is very satisfied.but he is subscribing @ Rs350/- which is too much IMHO :smile:

    The 300 Rs package is what I really desire! The Rs 350 package has just some more South Indian Channels which I really don’t need. I’m loving my package and am very content with the picture and sound quality that I get.
    Works equally well even if you have a relatively older TV.

    The only problem I see is that the call center guys are really lame (though you’ll seldom need em).

Many of the blogs I have read about Tata Sky has given me the impression that I am not the only one who is facing the heat of non-cooperative movement of their customer care helpline. Everytime, they place a slot for installation, they are bound to default for one or the other reason. Their engineer just do not appear on the scene and their system are updated with imaginative words, like “probem with local cable operator”. “not able to contact”, etc. Repeatative consultations has not annoying me beyond expecatation I am looking for the forum wehre I can write about my experience and let other “new comers” to know about the trap. You will pay Rs 4000/- for the full installation and then you will have to wait forever to get the installation done. Their slogan is correct in the way: “isako lagaa daalaa to life jindaa jalaa dalaa”. What else to write.

    I am borade from aurangabad maharashtra had purchased tata sky on 30th january & after 14 days the activation has not been done. the person claim that Rs.1000 voucher had been issued to us but fact is we don,t know about voucher & never seen it & nothing discussed with him what to do with it. only he came to me given digicom & collect cheque. if he could given voucher there must be discussion about how to recharge & when to recharge. i wake up after disconnected the service.

    Bought tata sky in SEPTEMBER 2007 with the scheme of 6months free for Rs.4000. Thinking that all the channel will be available. After that Tatasky started reducing the no. of channels by putting tem into packages like lifestyle silver life style gold , sports package etc.for this you have to pay more (appx. 40-50rs per package)This is making fool out of people. Buy reducing their price to Rs.260/ they have infact increased the price.For example.. If I opt for Super saver pack it would cost me Rs.260. without the channels which are in lifestyle silver and life style gold and sport gold pack. Now if I want to see all the channel I have to pay Rs.30 per package that make another 90Rs for all 3 packages so the total comes to RS260+90=350per month.And all the packages have some important channels like lifestyle silver has BBC in it. And what about the people who bought tatasky under diff. scheme. Like I bought it under 6months free. Tata sky is chor The suck. I am getting it removed Secondly there is a lag in tatasky. And also some stupid numbers keep on apprearing right in the middle of the screen.

    1. To us the Brand “TATA” means the following –

    • “ Ethical Business Practices”
    • “TRUTH” as propagated by Gandhiji
    • Brought images of Jamshedji Tata, JRD Tata and Ratan Tata in front of one’s eyes. These are the people who have all their life signified Customer Care at its Best.

    2. Alas, despite Ratan Tata having used the words “ Promise is a Promise” at the launch of the Nano, it does not seem to be happening so in the case of other Tata Group Coys. A recent case in point is the TATA SKY DTH.

    3. Out of nowhere, it decided to take off Star Sports / Star Cricket/ ESPN/ Ten Sports/ BBC World / BBC Entertainment/ Active Sports out of our already being paid for Bouquet of Channels. Just about 24 hrs notice. No intimation through any means – No E Mail, No Yellow Envelope Alert. Just an insignificant Ticker on the TV Screen run over a short period of time. It then classified tis deletions as a separate to be paid for Bouquet of Channels. .

    4. In any case, when we have already subscribed to a Package, the DTH provider just cannot change the content of the Bouquet and lay down that it has since become a separate Pay Channel. Also, this word Pay Channel is being used to hoodwink us. When we pay Rs 300.00 plus a month, as far as we are concerned, all are pay channels. What the Service Provider pays is his problem.

    5. To add insult to the Injury, they have highlighted that a corresponding amount will be reduced from the Monthly Subscription. Also, Tata Sky is trying to project as to how concerned it is about their Customers by giving them the Freedom to choose their Programmes and giving them an option to reduce their Monthly Bill.

    6. Tata Sky thinks that every-one is a Fool and will fall for such Gimmicks. Now this requires going in some detail. It would have been all-right in case the reduction in the Quantum of Subscription would have corresponded to the cost that is now required to be paid to take these Channels afresh. It is not at all so. For example, a sum of Rs 40.00. has since been reduced in the monthly subscription by Tata Sky for taking off BBC( 2 Channels), Star Sports, ESPN, Star Cricket and Ten Sports.

    Now, if one has to take these Channels afresh, the following will have to be paid for –

    Star Sports/ ESPN/ Star Cricket – Rs 40.00 p.m.
    Ten Sports – – Rs 15.00 p.m.
    BBC ( 2 Channels) – Rs 30.00 p.m.

    Total – Rs 80 .00 p.m.

    This means an additional expenditure of Rs 40.00 p.m.

    7. After this Blatant Cheating, Tata Sky is claiming to be a Champion of Customer Care.

    I just cannot even comprehend that A TATA Group Coy can stoop to such LOW EBBS.

    I have switched to the tata Sky from our local Cable TV operator for obtaining world class service as claimed in the advertisements. the world class service is to be in terms of quality as well as prompt account renewals / breakdown maintenance.
    However now the confidence in Tata Sky has been lost.i had registered a complaint that my set top box was unable to recive signal on 14 Sep 08. it was promised that within 24 hours that is by 15th sep my defect will be rectified. Today as on 17 Sep 08 also no one has turned up to rectify the defect.

    I have two senior citizens in the house for whom the only source of entertainment is the Television especially since they are unable to move out of the house. In such a situation non availability of the television even for short duration affects their morale. In fact the tataksy connection was taken just for them so that they have continuous availability of their favourite channels. Since last four days, non availability of the Television has affected them adversely.

    Their morale has gone down. They feel that tatasky with their prompt service could not be at fault and we are not registering the complaint on time. In other words “Poor service” of Tatasky is causing Domestic misunderstanding.

    I hold tatasky solely and wholly responsible for the above agony. It is high time that educated customers as we shift to better operators (especially with two other giants in the market, Dish and Reliance).

    I know this mail is going to fall on “Deaf ears” . But then I have no other option but to be at the mercy of your Service engineers.

    I wish had better service.

    Amby, yours could be one off case. I have had excellent experience with tata sky. They were very prompt in attending all my issues till date. And even our friends who are using tata sky, never faced any such problems.

    M using Tata for a long time now and it is working great for me. The customer care guys were very resourceful and promt while handling any issues i had in the past. M happy with the quality of product and service offered by tatasky.

    i have used tatasky and is very much satisfied with their service. So m considering to upgrade it to plus. Its a good thing they have 40% off for tata users. M quite excited about the whole pause and rewinding live TV, will make life so much easier.
