5 kickass online guitar websites

by Satish on July 12, 2008

The internet can well teach us a lot of things and it surely can make you an adept guitarist. Here are 5 websites to hone your skills with the guitar(and subsequently with the opposite sex, if you so wish). At your pace.

Guitar

Ultimate Guitar:

UG easily has to be one of the best guitar sites around. You’ll usually find the tablature for most songs around here. The website also features interviews with many guitar greats and has a very active community.

Guitar Cardio:

Yes, your fingers need the workout and GuitarCardio will give you just that. Just like on a treadmill, you choose what kind of scales or chords you need to practice upon, and et Viola! We are on a nice session of working your finger muscles up. (My, my)

The Guitar Thing:

The content on this site is created by Chandresh Kudwa of Dream Out Loud who is heralded as one of the best guitarist on the Indian rock scene. The site now offers all its content for free and has some really good video lessons on a myriad of topics. I swear I did not know what “Chicken Picking” was earlier.

Essential Guitar:

This is a rather simple looking site but don’t let your eyes fool you. It’s got a great deal of information within it. All the articles are easy to understand and are punctuated with illustrations. Just what the doctor ordered.

GuitarSite:

Another magazine style guitar website with loads of news and interviews. Head to the “Guitar Lessons” section to see a load of articles ranging from “How to nail a solo” to “What should I practice” etc etc.

Of course these sites are good only if you’ve had some guidance from an “offline teacher”. There are some really nifty things only a good human tutor can tell you. For the rest, there’s the internet.

Some more websites I found out after writing this post

1) Guitar-Tube: A very YouTube-y website. Go check it out.

2) JustinGuitar: Lots of info, free! (recommended by reader, Mark)

3) Guitar Noise: Amazing range or articles supported by lots of audio clips and illustrations. (recommended by reader, Timbo)

    This is great resource together.

    Thanks for sharing.

  • Janet
I got 2 new online guitar websites from your post.

    Thanks
    Learn Electric Guitar
  • Satish - my bad. I should have directed you straight to

    www.guitar-music-theory.com

which I see is all tidied up. That's where the living content is.

  • @Martin
That site still seems to be under construction. A lot of the links were pointing to dead content.
Will review it after a while.
  • Here's a very strong site that I recommend along with your other excellent choices: www.desiserna.com. Desi Serna cuts through the clutter and teaches fretboard theory in a straight ahead manner. I have tried many other courses but for me, all of Desi's teaching is very accessible and logical.

    Very Nice List.

May I suggest, however, adding songsterr.com? And moreover, may I suggest you *replace* Ultimate-Guitar.com with Songsterr.com? :D

Songsterr is basically Ultimate-Guitar, but with in-browser playing capabilities.

    :)
Most females around me prefer listening to the guitar than playing it themselves. But there are a few females who play quite well.

And here in India, there are a load of people who want to learn the guitar only want to impress the fairer sex.
Please forgive me if you found the statement offensive in any way. I have edited it

Nice list. However, you make the assumption at the beginning that it is only men who play guitar or who would like to know of good online guitar websites. ("Here are 5 websites to hone your skills with the guitar(and with the ladies, if you so wish.)")

Being a female guitarist, I have no desire to hone my skills with the ladies. ;)
  • I haven't 'forgotten' anything. I'm just adding whatever I know AND is good.
  • You forgot my site.
  • Hey Timbo,
I liked GuitarNoise! I've edited the post to include it.
  • Timbo
GuitarCardio looks great. I've got my night cut out for me.

Also, you should take a look at guitarnoise.com, they have a lot of useful lessons that will teach you theory in the process of teaching you to play a popular song.
  • Gud links dude... my bro is learning guitar,s these wud be quite heplful...

    Jay
  • Hey Mark,
That was a pretty nice website. I'll make sure to include it in my next list.

BTW, I encourage my readers to add more links in the comments. I know I might have missed out on countless numbers of fantastic websites.

    i've always used:

    http://www.justinguitar.com

he gives in depth explanations on a lot of different techniques and styles, and he keeps posting videos. about 95% of the site is free, no less.

    spread the word!
  • Nice links!
  • Satish - Thanks for the link to GuitarCardio! I'm grateful that you thought it was worth putting in front of your readers.

I hope you come back soon - and keep an eye on the GC blog, because I'll be adding new features in the very near future, and writing about them there.

    Cheers,
    - Brad
