Fight Boredom with 13 of the best Online Comics

by Satish on March 22, 2010

Everyone we know has had something or the other to do with comics and comic strips at some point in their life. Largely during their pre-teenage years. Even today most of us skip the depressing nonsense newspapers throw at us and head straight for the comic section to brighten up our days.

Pajama Forest

By far, the most well animated strip in the entire lot. And just as good as it looks, its funny too. Features the ‘awesomely imaginative adventures of dude named August and his little brother Ed’. (click on image to view the larger version. Pajama Forest recommended by Tamanna J)

XKCD

XKCD calls itself “a webcomic of romance, sarcasm, math, and language” about which we have no doubt whatsoever. The creator says it all started when he scanned some back of the notebook stuff to his website and started getting attention for it. Since then, XKCD has stamped its authority over geek humour with its simple art and trademark witty lines.   Which reminds me that I need to get more structured about my back of the notebook escapades. No? Alright.

Cyanide and Happiness

This is one webcomic which, quite simply put, has no barriers whatsoever. Though the one I’ve featured here is very clean, some comics can come at you as though someone’s pulled the carpet from under your feet. At times they’ll show scant regard for your feelings and humanity in general. So, in all seriousness this isn’t for the faint at heart. But its here because of a simple reason, its funny as hell. Plus they also have a section of fairly well animated short movies. Think of them as a 2 minute moving C&H, nothing more nothing less.

Questionable Content

The first thing that you notice about QC are the pretty illustrations. As you dive deeper, you also figure out that this comic is pretty darn funny as well. Its supposed to be a webcomic about ‘romance, indie rock, little robots, and the problems people have’. Should you add it to your list? Heck yes. (Suggested by reader Unimind).

Dilbert

If there’s one strip that well and truly reflects office culture, its gotta be Dilbert. Scott Adams’ brilliance has probably been putting a smile on your mug for ages through newspapers and you’d be pleased to know that it’s still going strong at Dilbert.com complete with an animated Dilbert. Plus the website also has cool thingamajigs that allow you to make your own strips, shop for Dilbert merchandise, the works. What’s more, you even get a Dilbert branded file sharing service at DilbertFiles.com

SMBC

Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal is another comic which will take a pot shot at everything under the sun and then some. It is largely a singe panel comic but occasionally deviates into more. Though it doesn’t make you laugh on a consistent basis, it delivers gems once in a while. Precisely why it’s on this list in the first place.

Joy Of Tech

Here’s one more geek comic which will routinely take potshots at Apple, Microsoft and everything in between. They are particularly famous for taking aim at Apple fanboys and Apple itself in general as you can see in the above strip. But they are also nice at admitting that all the comics are churned out through Apple machines. Sniff, what love.

GoComics

Is a comic compilation ever complete without including Jim Davis’ Garfield and Bill Watterson’s Calvin and Hobbes? No. That is why you must sign up at GoComics.com to get these two comical gems and many more that you see in newspapers. They’ll even email you the strips you select, first thing in the morning. Cool or what?

White Ninja

Here’s a certain ninja who roams around wearing a white suit as opposed to a black one which those serious ninja guys strut around with and that’s where the irony begins. A few nuts loose here and there don’t stop him from saving the world. Or putting himself in mortal peril while doing absolutely stupid things. The illustrations are very simple, but they just get the job done.

Least I Could Do

LICD is a really well animated strip which runs in short stories and that is what keeps you going back to it for more. The illustrations are very well done at most times but the makers keep harking back to black and white once in a while.

Dinosaur Comics

The illustrations in Dino comics never change, its only the dialogues that get Ryan North’s attention 5 times a week. Features 2 dinosaurs trampling over houses, cars and people with the said dinos ranting about morbidly random things like weight loss, Confucious-esque philosophy, languages, supernatural creatures and everything in between.

Fly, You Fools

“An Indian web comic about life and its irritations” says the title and its exactly just that. There are no illustrations in the comic, only weirdly taken pictures photoshopped with a lot of grain and a few filters thrown in for added effect. If you’re an Indian, you will most certainly relate to it and have a few hearty laughs as you pass the comic around on Facebook and Twitter. My only grouse is that it isn’t regular, but that’s the way with us Indian bloggers, we can’t really drop what we’re doing in the day.

Mind Your Business, Anna

In India, getting into one of the Indian Institute’s of Management for an MBA program is the stuff wet dreams are made up of. The primary reason would be the huge salary involved but that’s the only thing people look at. Little do they know how an MBA more often than not ruins your sanity for good and that is what this strip is set out to tell the world. The visual style is similar to FYF but that’s where the similarity ends and screwing business programs begins.

Have I missed out any of your favourite web comics? Sound off in the comments.

You should give A Softer World a shot.
    http://www.asofterworld.com
It has this sort of grim, cynical feel about it, from the sense of humor to the illustrations. Clearly not for everyone, but one of my personal favorites. Since I read 7 out of your 13 on a regular basis, I thought we might have similar taste.

Great list! Some webcomics I like (most are more storyline-oriented than gag-a-day):

Girl Genius by Kaja and Phil Foglio at http://www.girlgeniusonline.com
Steampunk comic set in alternate-history europe. Follows main character Agatha in her journey from clumsy lab assistant to powerful mad scientist.

Gunnerkrigg Court by Tom Siddell at http://www.gunnerkrigg.com
Two young girls and their adventures in a school of sci-fi technology and magic. Lots of mythological references.

The Adventure of Dr. McNinja by Christopher Hastings et. al. at http://drmcninja.com
The adventures of a doctor who is also a ninja. I love the juxtaposition of the relatively serious-looking art style with the silly things that happen in the comic.

The Phoenix Requiem by Sarah Ellerton at http://requiem.seraph-inn.com
Alternate history victorian-era romance with excellent art and writing. Also there are undead.

Galaxion by Tara Tallan at http://galaxioncomics.com
Sci-Fi comic about the events surrounding the test run of a new hyperspace engine. Good writing and art.

These are all story comics, so it's best to start at the beginning.
